.Briegal Distributes Nearly One Thousand PPE for Forest Firefighters
The NGO Briegal has completed the second phase of its Forest Fire Vulnerability Reduction project in Peru, marking a logistical and cooperation milestone with the delivery of nearly one thousand Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for emergency responders.
This material, crucial for the safety of those fighting the fire, was donated by the Xunta de Galicia after being decommissioned, demonstrating that “out of use” equipment in one context can save lives in another.
🚢 Logistics and Cross-Border Solidarity
Mobilization of this material to Peru was possible thanks to a chain of solidarity and collaboration:
- Funding: The shipment of the container was financed by the Solidarity Award from the Ferrol City Council (Ayuntamiento de Ferrol).
- Customs Clearance: The Peruvian Firefighters Association (Asociacion peruana de bomberos) provided essential support for clearing the cargo in Peru.
- On-Ground Logistics: BUSF Perú was a key ally in the distribution logistics efforts.
🎯 National and International Scope: 12 Regions and Beyond
The distribution of the PPE involved a massive deployment, reaching twelve Peruvian departments and border regions of Bolivia, ensuring the protection of responders in high-risk areas.
The beneficiary departments are: LORETO, AMAZONAS, CAJAMARCA, ÁNCASH, CUSCO, MADRE DE DIOS, PUNO, AYACUCHO, APURÍMAC, MOQUEGUA, and TACNA.
🚒 Reinforcement for Key Institutions
The protective equipment was strategically distributed among institutions that safeguard both lives and Peru’s invaluable natural and cultural heritage:
1. Volunteer Firefighters of Peru (Bomberos Voluntarios de Perú)
The delivery reinforced the departmental commands of:
- Cusco, Puno, Tacna, Apurímac, Madre de Dios, Áncash, and Loreto.
- In total, direct coverage was provided to 27 fire companies, strengthening their first response capability.
2. National Service of Natural Protected Areas by the State (SERNANP)
The equipment is intended for the protection of crucial parks, including:
- TITICACA NATIONAL RESERVE, MACHUPICCHU HISTORICAL SANCTUARY, BAHUAJA SONENE NATIONAL PARK, AMARAKAERI COMMUNAL RESERVE, MEGANTONI NATIONAL SANCTUARY, MACHIGUENGA COMMUNAL RESERVE, and MANU NATIONAL PARK.
3. Ministry of Culture (Ministerio de Cultura)
Protection for personnel guarding archaeological parks, vital to Peruvian identity, was prioritized:
- MACHUPICCHU, OLLANTAYTAMBO, VILCABAMBA, SAQSAYWAMAN, INCA TRAIL (CAMINO INCA), AMAZONAS, AYACUCHO, and CAJAMARCA.
Other Benefiting Institutions
The distribution also included BUSF Perú and the Municipalities of Machu Picchu, Anta, and Vilcabamba, ensuring that protection reaches all levels of intervention.
