.The NGO Briegal has successfully completed an intensive phase of its project to reduce vulnerability to forest fires in Peru, a key initiative funded by the Galician Cooperation and Solidarity Fund.
This project has focused on training and institutional strengthening in critical regions, demonstrating immediate impact and laying solid foundations for long-term prevention.
🧑🚒 Elite Training and Baptism of Fire in Puno
The central focus of this phase was a specialized training course for first responders in Puno. The training included crucial participation from BUSF Peru, the Peruvian Army, the Peruvian Red Cross, and specialized groups from Bolivia.
The training moved from theory to practice in the most urgent way possible: course participants successfully responded to and controlled a real forest fire that broke out during the training, conclusively validating the effectiveness of the knowledge shared.
🤝 Collaboration and Institutional Strengthening
After the training, the Briegal team visited various fire departments in the Puno and Cusco regions with two key objectives:
To learn about their operational reality: To gain first-hand understanding of the local challenges and needs in firefighting.
Delivery of Equipment: A significant donation of rescue equipment was made to strengthen their response capabilities.
🏛️ Protection of Archaeological Heritage and Agreements
Aware of the threat that fires pose to Peru’s priceless cultural heritage, we visited several world-renowned archaeological parks (such as Vilcabamba, Machu Picchu, and Pisac) to assess their vulnerability to forest fires.
This fieldwork resulted in the signing of strategic collaboration agreements with the municipalities of:
- Vilcabamba
- Machu Picchu
- Anta
- Centro poblado Isla Taquile
- Coata
Finally, a fruitful meeting was held with representatives of the Ministry of Culture, where the donation of essential personal protective equipment (PPE) for personnel fighting forest fires in these sensitive areas was formalized.
